Well, if this baby is a girl we are in for a world of hurt!
It all started with a scouting trip out into the world of maternity wear (I wasn't planning on buying, just checking out what's available). Turns out that world is more like a small town... I mean one of those 100 resident small towns that doesn't even have a gas station. There is not a lot of selection out there. So, I moved on to much more fun scouting - baby gear scouting!
I started with swings and bouncers and high chairs, etc. That was a little overwhelming! ...so I moved on to something much more fun. CLOTHES! Oh, the little boy clothes were so cute - all 5 outfits! What is that!?! There is so little boys selection vs. girls selection. NOT that I'm complaining (yet)- the girls stuff is so freaking adorable! Everywhere I turned there was something that I left me thinking "oh hell yeah I'd put that on my baby girl!" and "hmmm, what size would she need for next summer..." LOL! I don't even know if it's a boy or a girl yet, but I'm already plotting a baby girls summer wardrobe! Of course I've been having visions of a little boys nursery, so either way I'm ready to get started on something!
We had our second baby appointment last Friday. Thank God I have so many friends with babies - they all warned me that the 12 week appointment can be hard to hear the heartbeat on the doppler - so not to worry if they couldn't find it. I'm glad I had that warning! Dr. Curry had a student this month, Starla, and she performed the majority of the appointment. She couldn't find the heart beat (she even warned us that she sometimes has trouble) so she called in Dr. Curry. He couldn't find it either so he said we'd get to have another ultrasound. So, wrapping my lovely hospital gown around me we tip toed to the ultrasound room to see our little one again. Doctor didn't even have to look very hard - baby and a healthy heart beat showed up immediately on the screen. The heart rate was 161 bpm - good and strong. The student took over for a while and took some pictures and let us just watch our little one for a little bit. Active little bugger! Baby had it's arms up over it's head - and then would bring them down to it's mouth. They showed us the baby's face... not as cute as you would hope at this point - on an ultrasound it looks a bit more like an alien... or skeletor. But I love it anyway! ...besides - it should grow out of all of that! It was rolling around and just on the go in general. The student mentioned that the placenta may be near the outside of my belly - which may be why we couldn't hear the heart beat. I didn't ask her any more about it, so I don't even know if that's exactly what I heard! I was too enamoured with watching that little baby move - seeing little fingers and seeing how active it was! It was amazing - even more so than the first ultrasound!
Dr. Curry said it was too early to tell the sex of the baby but said they'd order an ultrasound around 18 weeks to check measurements and they'd possibly be able to tell then. That's 5 more weeks... seems like forever!
Tomorrow I'll be a full 13 weeks. Baby has tiny fingerprints now. The body is starting to catch up in size to the head - which is still 1/3 of the body size. Baby is slmost 3" long and weighs nearly a full ounce - almost the size of a peach (from crown to bottom). Hopefully the last remnants of morning sickness are going to find their way out the door in the next week or two - hopefully it takes my aversion to tomato products with it and we can have spaghetti, BBQ and pizza again! I'm not showing, but I have a feeling that I'll need new clothes very soon. Things are just looking like their comfort factor will drop quickly in the next week or two. I'd better find a promising store or online retailer soon!

The cat is out of the bag
Well, the pressure finally mounted to the point that I couldn't take it any more. I had to break the news at work. I pulled my boss Carol into her boss Tom's office and closed the door. Tom's reaction could not have taken me more by surprise. Don't get me wrong - I expected him to be happy - he's a family man, but the whooping and hollering and jumping around in celebration absolutely floored me! Carol was pleased as punch also. I got more support and encouragement from Tom than I would have ever imagined. He was thrilled. I let them know that I'm due in the busiest part of our busy season, and Tom didn't even blink an eye - just said it would all be fine and not to even worry about it. He told me that I could tell George (our VP) if I wanted or he'd tell him. It was the end of the day, so I didn't bother George just yet. I let the guys in my group know (as they were surely suspicious of my closed door meeting) and shortly there after called it a day.
The next morning I'm working away and George came out and asked me what's new. Knowing even a little about George I knew that meant that he knew, so I responded "I don't know George, what have you heard!?" He laughed and said he may have heard something and came around and gave me a big hug and congratulations. Being out in the middle of cube-world this brought some inquiries and before I knew it the whole office knew the news. There were only a couple of mentions of the inconvenience of my due date (which I was expecting).
It feels good to have everything out in the open. No secrets, no whispers. It's all out there. Tom admitted that he'd heard something or another that led him to expect the news soon - but he wasn't sure if it was true or not, so he didn't want to jump to any conclusions.
It was a helluva way to come back to the office after a little vacation. My trip with Erin & Aubrey couldn't have been better. We all learned a bit about altitude (it always leaves something to learn the next time). I may have felt Baby M kick for the first time. I know it's really early, so I was highly suspicious, but it was during my flight to Denver, on the decent, and it was unlike anything I'd ever felt before - like 2 bubbles right in the front of my tummy. I couldn't be sure - because I was only just over 11 weeks, but it didn't feel like anything I'd experienced before. I walked through the Denver airport with the most ridiculous grin on my face. I wish Brian had been with me, but it was nothing he'd have ever felt, so he'd have probably been disappointed in the moment.
Erin, Aubrey and I had a great weekend and I learned more about pregnancy, babies, and motherhood than I'm sure I'll ever be able to remember from them in our short time together! I'm glad I have so many resources during this time in my life. All of my friends have an element of expertise to offer. I'll have them all on speed dial come November!
Tomorrow I'll be 12 weeks. The baby will be the size of a plum and his or her facial features are becoming more defined. There are now well formed fingernails on the perfect little fingers - those fingers will soon start opening and closing in little fists. I'm still feeling better than I was, and only occasionally have full blown nausea, although I still have to make sure I've got snacks regularly to keep the queasiness away. I don't have any sign of a bump yet... just the same ol' belly I've always had - only I can't suck it in anymore! I have my second baby appointment on Friday, and on top of my list of questions is when will we find out if it's a boy or a girl!! I'm expecting mid July, but we'll see what he says. I can't wait until we hear that little heartbeat again. When we've got the thumbs-up from Doc & his magic doppler we'll make it public knowledge on facebook - but most people already know!

Getting better every day
Today I'm 11 weeks along. I can see the light at the end of the 1st-trimester-tunnel! I'm noticing a little bit more of the nausea (or really just queasiness now) diminishing every day. I got so excited (and then felt so silly) when I finally felt hunger again - and not just overwhelming waves of nausea when I knew it was time to eat. Don't get me wrong, I still get queasy and know it's time to feed this little monster, but it's going away slowly but surely! I've managed to reduce my "feedings" a bit and am feeling a bit more normal (although I'm still on an infantile 3 hour feeding schedule). I even got back into my workout routine this week. We spent the weekend laying 44 bags of mulch and 5 bags of river rock (Brian did 90% of the work... he carried every last bag - I just spread the mulch). It felt great to get out in the spring air and do something normal!
Although there is no baby to show for it yet, Brian treated me to a wonderful Mother's Day anyway. He got up early and did the grocery shopping. Woke me up to hot fresh french toast (and an oh-so-sweet Mothers Day card), then took Zeppelin to the dog park while I climbed back in bed for an hour or so (it was a 7:30 breakfast on a weekend - even if I never got back to sleep it was nice to snuggle back in for a bit). We worked in the yard (a Pestinger family spring-holiday tradition) and Brian gave both dogs a much needed bath. He cooked me 3 meals that day - closing the day with the most delicious steak and roasted potato's ever - and even took the dogs and disappeared for a while so I could have an afternoon nap. What a guy! For not having even delivered a baby yet he gave me quite the royal treatment!
I'm on a flight to Denver tomorrow morning. I'm meeting Erin & Aubrey at the Denver airport and Dusty will pick us up and take us back to the house in Frisco. I haven't seen Dusty since we shared the news (nor have I seen Erin or Aubrey since then) so I anticipate a lot of laughs and hugs and tears. Deal with it Denver airport! It looks like Denver and Frisco are getting snow today - but supposed to be in the 50's over the weekend, so packing is a challenge, but I'm fairly certain I'll have far more than I need. I'm more than pumped for a weekend with the girls (and Dustin) just enjoying everything Frisco (and the surrounding area) has to offer. But, of course, I woke up this morning and rolled over and kissed Brian good morning like I do almost every day, and got sad that he won't be there. But we'll both survive and be excited to see each other on Sunday.
Like I said - I'm 11 weeks along today. Baby M is the size of a lime (I'm assuming they mean a key lime when they say just over 1 1/2" long) and is now growing so fast (s)he will double in size by this time next week! Pretty soon the hands will open and close into fists. Reproductive organs are forming and becoming more distinguished... we're a little over half way to finding out what this lil' raspberry is going to be! (I know it's much bigger than a raspberry now, but I just kind of got stuck on it and have been using that term ever since!) I'm still not showing, but I am as puffy as ever. My clothes still fit comfortably and I now feel good enough to actually get excited for things like shopping for maternity clothes when the time comes (about all I can really do until we find out if we're having a son or a daughter). I still feel like it's a little girl, but as for what I want - it changes every day - which I think is great - it shows that whatever they tell us when we find out will be fantastic news! I won't be rooting one way or another.
Okay, it's been about 3 hours since I ate something... my snack alarm is ringing loud and clear! Brian doesn't believe me when I tell him that this feeding schedule is more of a nuissance than a treat. LOL!

Fingers crossed!
Oy! It's been a rough month, but I think (and hope and pray) we're seeing a light at the end of the tunnel! After trying every suggestion and myth and urban legend I could find to ease the nausea I gave up and switched my prenatal vitamins to Flintstones. My friend Aubrey had carried healthy happy beautiful twins on Flintstones at the suggestion of her doctor (who is also my doctor) and when I told him I was having some nausea at our first appointment he told me not to be afraid to switch to Flintstones because they are easier on the tummy -he just reminded me to take 2 a day instead of one. Well last week I finally broke down and bought a Costco sized bottle of Flintstones and started taking them instead of my prenatal. I noticed an immediate difference - although I still felt queasy most of the day and I was definitely not 100%, it was better than standing in the bathroom every morning and evening heaving! Monday night I finally started getting a real appetite back and took my pills after dinner, as usual. I'd thought angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream sounded good, so a bit after I took my pills Brian and I had some of that. Well, hell! I woke up Tuesday morning without any nausea... I treaded lightly cuz I didn't want to tempt fate, but all day I felt pretty darned good! I definitely had a touch of queasiness when I knew I needed to eat something, but it was definitely an improvement from even the day before! There was a bit of bounce in my step - I took Blue for a walk and enjoyed getting out again. It was a good day! That night I took my pills after dinner as usual - and at bedtime I was feeling nauseated again. It finally hit me that I have to sandwich those vitamins in food! Apparently my tummy would rather believe I'm eating incredibly nutritious food than taking vitamins! LOL! As soon as I had a small bite to eat I was feeling better and woke up this morning feeling good again. I'm just hoping that stays the case!
I'm definitely not showing at all yet, but I'm noticing it's more difficult to suck in my belly. Where I used to be able to stand up really straight and slim things down a bit, now I'm just taller and yet still puffy when I stand up really straight. Probably just pregnancy bloat, but it's a change. My clothes still fit fine, but for some reason I dread wearing them all. It's like they are all far too close to me to be comfortable - even though they aren't really tight. I have a feeling the heat of this summer will be interesting! It may be a good thing that maxi dresses have been in style for a few years! I'm leaving on a short girls trip next Thursday and I'm praying this feeling better stuff sticks around and I'm feeling fun and more energetic when I get to see my friends again! I do not want to be the party pooper! I've definitely noticed as my nausea subsides my emotions are shifting into high gear. Brian's alarm went off early on Monday and I burst into hysterical tears... hmmm... thats not like me! Monday night I recieved a pregnancy care package from my friend Erin (SO sweet) and I burst into hysterical tears again! Poor Brian - he's gotten really good at just hugging me and not asking for an explaination - my explainations don't really make any sense in that moment, anyway! Tuesday we were in the card aisle of Target and I just grabbed a card and walked out with tears running down my face. I had to stop reading and just leave. Brian just shook his head. LOL! I can't explain it - it just is what it is.
Today I'm 10 weeks pregnant. Creeping ever closer to that blessed 2nd trimester (I hear great things - I hope it lives up to my expectations)! Baby is the size of a prune from crown to bottom. A prune just doesn't sound right to me - so shriveled and dehydrated. Another site says baby is the size of a kumquat... that doesn't help, I don't even know what that is! Anyway, the webbing between fingers and toes is gone now and tiny little fingernails and toenails are starting to form - as well as toothbuds and hair. The baby is officially a fetus today - that makes me smile! "Fetus" is much more human-sounding (and looking) than whatever it was before now!
