My little hero...

This lil' one still has a tail, and it's already my hero!  Our doberman, Zeppelin, woke up early on Saturday morning throwing up.  After 36 hours of him being lethargic and in obvious abdominal discomfort we took him into the emergency vet hospital.  We debated whether to wait another 15 hours and take him to his vet Monday morning, but it was a good thing we didn't.  They found an intestinal obstruction and he had to go into emergency surgery Sunday night.  Lets just say the Doggie ER is about as affordable as you are imagining right now... and my financially minded husband shocked the hell out of me when he said we'd do whatever it takes to make our little family whole.  At such a sad and scary moment for me - he came through, just like he always does.  I'd have thought the impending arrival of Baby M would make it less likely that we make our little pound puppy a million-doller-baby, but it turns out that Baby M was the reason for saving the day - and Zeppelin.

Anyone who knows me well knows that my pups are my family... they are my babies.  And - being a Pestinger, I'm a crier... and this was a hard ugly-cry going down at the Vet ER. Seeing how distraught I was at just the thought of Zeppelin being in such pain and danger, Brian made the decision that my emotional stability, and therefore the well-being of Zeppelin, was in the best interest of Baby M.  Baby M is my (and Zeppelin's) hero!  Or maybe I should say Brian is my hero - and Baby M is his lil' side-kick!

The surgeon started prepping Zeppein a bit before 6pm, and at 8pm they called to say he came through very well.  They had hoped to just make an incision in the small intestine and remove the blockage, but when they got inside there was a 6" section that was purple and damaged.  They removed that section and reattached the remaining healthy tissue.  The next 3-5 days will be crucial in whether any complications arise.  After those five days it's a typical recovery - much the same as a neuter... only with a much bigger incision!  In 2 weeks time he should be back in the swing of things.

I know this post was much more about the dog than the baby, but Baby M definitely played a part in saving our little family!

PS - Baby M is 5 weeks now, about the size of a sesame seed.
